Below are characteristics that are very important to be a successful intercessor with a heart like God:

  • You are teachable and you can be corrected (Heb 12:6; Prov 15:31; 1 Pet 2:23; Prov 13:18 and Prov 12:1)
  • You are eager to learn and grow (Prov 9:9)
  • You rejoice when others are celebrated (Luke 15 The Prodigal Son; Jonah 4 – the prodigal brother and Jonah did not rejoice in other’s change for the good)
  • You know that no job is too small for you with God (Mark 10:27)
  • You don’t have to be right (Matt 5:9; 1 Cor 13:5)
  • You naturally seek the wisdom of others and God (James 1:5; Eph 1:17; Prov 1:7)
  • You actually DO pray/intercede when others ask (1Thess 5:17)
  • You freely, readily admit your flaws, mistakes, and failures; but you don’t focus on your shortcomings nor the shortcomings of others (2 Cor 5:17; 2 Cor 7:10; Matt 7:1)
  • You live to help others succeed (Rom 15:1; John 15:13)
  • You are not “entitled” in an ungodly way (James 4:6; 1 Cor 13:4)
  • You are patient (1Cor 13:4)
  • You don’t promote yourself (1 Cor 13:4-5)
  • You give all the glory to God and never want the glory for yourself (Ps 115:1)
  • You respect all others (including not interrupting others or being rude) (1 Cor 13:5)
  • You are joyful, happy, positive, hopeful (Prov 17:22; Phil 4:4; Jer 29:11)
  • You don’t gossip about others, including what others have asked you to intercede about and you don’t judge others in their shortcomings (Matt 7:1-2)
  • You have the right motives for interceding

Great bits of help regarding “character” for intercessors can be found in the Beatitudes (Matt 5), the Love Chapter (1 Cor 13), and the Fruits of the Spirit scriptures (Gal 5:22-23)

  1. The characteristics are clearly spelt.
They van be easily understood and followed by the most ordinary person in rural Africa where not many of them cannot read and write.
They can even help build someone’s character.
Simpe as they are they help to train other people with ease.
