Items in Your Home You Must Destroy…or Why Sleep with Demons?

Many have asked me about cleansing their home of unholy objects which cause an inroad to Satan’s domain, wanting to know what they need to get rid of quite often. Other Christians have never heard that they need to destroy these ungodly things, and some do not think it is important. However, it is very important since there are spiritual forces that can inhabit physical objects. You can do this alone or with another saint as it is quite easy and does not require a pastor or leader (though you might if you wish).

Many question why they have been attacked or why they have had so many problems for which they cannot find a reason; and many times, the Lord reveals that there are evil objects in their home which are the roots or inroads to Satan. Sometimes people have obtained deliverance and/or healing but go right back into their homes where there are things like idols or witchcraft items; then the demons and sickness can return easily.

Just as the Israelites of old were instructed to rid their homes and lives of ungodly items, many are in bondage presently due to the same sins, with some attacked with sickness, financial lack, confusion, inability to sleep, nightmares, family strife, financial attacks,not seeing prayers answered, apparitions or crazy movements in the home with no explanation, and many other types of attacks from the enemy.

There are so many scriptures that tell us how bad it is to keep any of these items that I cannot list them all, but here are 2 of God’s 10 Commandments from Ex 20:3-6 which shows how dangerous this is: “You shall have no other gods. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Therefore, not only can this affect you and your household, but generations after you as well.

I once went to a wonderful exhibit from the Israel Antiquities Association which had one huge room of replicated homes of ancient Israel from archeological digs there. In every dwelling there was an evil altar dedicated to ungodly worship of idols from foreign cultures with small idols on every altar. One entire city that was excavated had these evil altars in every home, each with at least one idol, mostly that of Ashtoreth. The archeologists could easily prove that citizens were not buried there, there was no war there; but the people were carried away captive as slaves due to this sin of idolatry as warned against repeatedly in the Bible.

Why is this so important? When you have something in your home that has an inroad to Satan, he believes it allows him access and takes advantage. It is like Satan is saying in the court of heaven: “This believer has something that belongs to me and demonstrates that he/she has a connection to me; therefore, I have a legal right and entitlement to enter their dwelling and life, to do what I desire.”

My former pastor, Bob Beckett says in his book, Commitment to Conquer, that it is like an easement in real estate, the law of equal access in which a person who owns land surrounding another person’s land must allow the surrounded person free access through a road to their individual property. In other words, Satan has access to enter legally into your dwelling if there is something he can claim is dedicated to or honors him. This is how he infiltrates our homes, lives, churches, and families.

Intercessors, leaders, and ministries can be particularly demonically and detrimentally influenced, attacked, and hindered by having these items in their home or office as Satan surely wants to hinder or even stop their work for the kingdom.

I have heard people argue that “Jesus won the battle and Satan cannot enter if I am a Christian,” but this naivety is far from truth. The Bible explains, God’s people perish for lack of knowledge, but here is the whole verse: ^“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children,” in Hosea 4:6 (KJV). The Bible is very explicit that if something comes before God, that is an idol. If we have an idol or an item of witchcraft, then we have sinned and given Satan a legal right to harass and afflict us, even in this New Testament Age.

You cannot have one foot in the kingdom of God and one foot in Satan’s kingdom as you cannot serve two masters. The courts of heaven are a very real place where Satan comes to accuse the saints and claim dominion. More than just idols, some items have curses put on them by others including witches and those opposed to Christianity, including those from foreign countries. A pastor once reported that he purchased art on a mission trip and came home with diabetes; but when he threw away the object, the diabetes left him.

It might take repeated times of going through things in your home, church, office, or vehicle to completely rid these accursed things. Is it worth it to endanger yourself and your family? Do you want to sleep with demons? It is important to not sell these items or give them away no matter how valuable because you do not want the curse or satanic presence transferred to anyone else, including non-Christians. Items can be burned if this is safe; but if that is not possible, be sure to dispose of them so that no one else can get them.

When in doubt, the gift of discernment is needed to decide what items need to be destroyed, but some items are obvious. This is not a trite religious belief – it is a matter of who you serve: God or the devil, and who do you want to envelope your life.

It is imperative that churches also do this as the Bible talks about as well in repeated scriptures. Remember the story of Nehemiah finding out that Eliashib had allowed Tobiah (one of the ones who tried to stop the rebuilding of the Temple) to sleep in the basement of the Temple with his demonic objects and idols he was keeping? We read this in Nehemiah 13:6-9 (NIV): “But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.” We must do this often just like Nehemiah in our homes, businesses, churches, and vehicles. Churches ca do this as a church-wide ceremony.

Here is a general list of items that to destroy or trash in a safe and permanent manner:

1. Jewelry and art. Buddhas, Ankhs, Hindu deities, idols, yoga art, gargoyles, good luck charms, evil markings, mythology, and astrology items should all be destroyed. Dream catchers and specific evil Indigenous art must be destroyed as well. We can agree that there are wonderful native art pieces that have a cultural basis and history; however, some cultural items are things that invite demons into the home and were part of the culture before the gospel was brought to them. For instance, dream catchers invite demons to bring evil dreams and actual demons to you and your family. Idols, obelisks, Kachina dolls, totem poles and other items like this represent demons (sometimes even principalities) and call in demons to your dwelling place.
2. Witchcraft items. Ouija boards, fantasy crystals, demonic games, fortune telling items like tarot cards and tea leaf reading, Pokémon, astrology, Sanrio, Kurumi and Harry Potter. Items used in casting spells, water witching, creating watcher spirits, or doing any type of sorcery, divination, magic, or witchcraft.
3. Certain books, music, and videos. These can include books or videos of astrology, witchcraft, horror, vampires, divination, fortune telling, voodoo, any mythology, false religions, Kabbalah, New Age, homosexuality, pornography, freemasonry, and may include some children’s books. Worldly music, especially rock secular music should never be listened to as it can entice a person to do things that God does not want them to do and invites demons in as well and should be destroyed. The words of a song are key.
4. Idols. This can include posters, pictures, statues, masks, or other art that is idol related. It might be worship of celebrities or objects of Hinduism, Buddhism or New Age. If the love of money is worshipped, it is an idol. Ancestral worship is common in many cultures and many of those items should be destroyed, especially an altar to a dead loved one.
5. Certain oils and medicinals. Some oils used in massage or treatments, and incense need to be destroyed. These can be from certain countries or religions that bring sickness and curses. Have discernment and destroy as God leads.
6. Certain games and toys. Destroy all types of games of intense bloodshed and destruction, witchcraft, disrespect and killing of police, stealing, drug use and sales, voodoo. This might include card games, certain dolls, video games, card collections and evil dolls, Pokemon and Halloween items. See #2 above.
7. Unknown items or history of the place that need discernment. Sometimes it is necessary for the gift of discernment and inquiring of the Lord to show you the root of a problem, either through a Word of Knowledge, Godly dream or vision, or any other type of prophecy since some things can be hidden in the foundation or walls. A dear friend was having nightmares, insomnia, and felt “creepy” with a dresser mirror in her bedroom. She had covered up the mirror, and things improved but did not stop. In prayer we were alerted by the Lord that the root was from a fire from the previous tenant who might have been doing witchcraft, Santerria, or ancestor worship with candles, or a person was injured or killed in the fire. When the room and home were anointed, the problem was fully eradicated, and she and her family were quickly able to move further in ministry as destiny was finally opened. Other times, sin might have happened on the land or there are hidden evil objects that the Lord will have to reveal. After destroying the items, repent for having them no matter how it got there. Next, always anoint your home with anointed oil which you have prayed over (and anoint adjacent shared walls if any). Anoint every window and door like the Israelites were instructed to do by God with blood before leaving Egypt in Exodus 12. Then dedicate your home, church or business to the Lord. You can worship as you do this and declare scriptures such as Psalm 91 aloud. Do this frequently since there are items and people who come into your home, business or church periodically, and because sometimes it takes layers of finding more and more objects that do not glorify God.

I have often been asked to come and rid businesses of spiritual darkness, and there are many testimonies. Once we did so for a friend who owned a realty and discovered witchcraft drawings made by an employee hidden under their desk calendar, then we found drug and sex paraphernalia outside the business. Strife stopped and business increased when we rid the area of these sinful things and anointed the business and land.

There is no fear or legalism in this, and we certainly do not concentrate on demons; however, this is practicality and wisdom from living God’s Word. We must have a Godly fear of the Lord above the world and its offerings. The bottom line is that if it does not glorify God, then destroy it. There is always fruit when you remove these things, repent, and cleanse your home.

These items keep us in darkness and establish a foothold rapidly, but Jesus came to give us life and that more abundantly as John 10:10 (AMP) says in full: “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].” Bring life to every part of your atmosphere by destroying these things and stop sleeping with the enemy!
